Role overview

The Director, Machine Learning Engineering reporting to VP, Enterprise Data, is a core member of Accolade’s enterprise data platform team and will will be working with a close-knit team of applied scientists, data engineers and software engineers on some of the most exciting problems at the intersection of AI and healthcare. Through leveraging Accolade’s unique consumer healthcare data, you will use your software engineering expertise to enable our machine learning and statistical models to reach millions of Accolade members and impact their well-being by helping them make right decisions regarding their healthcare needs

A Day In the Life….

  • Collaborate closely with a team of applied scientists and data engineers to ship model prototypes to production, thereby making them available at scale to serve hundreds of thousands of Accolade members
  • Clearly define the scope and requirements for executing major projects, and work with Technical Program Managers to get those on the team roadmap    
  • Act as a critical resource contributing to architectural designs in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, identifying requirements and serving as an engineering expert to bridge the gap between ML researchers and other engineering teams at Accolade
  • Submit code reviews, write documentations while demonstrating industry coding standards and engineering best practices
  • Develop leadership skills through providing technical support and mentorship to junior team members as they contribute to larger projects

What we are looking for…

In addition to being able to carry out the above responsibilities, we're looking for someone comfortable working in a fast paced, ever changing environment who has experience with data transformation/warehousing, as indicated by the following attributes

  • BSc or MSc degree in computer science, engineering, or other STEM fields
  • Minimum of 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering roles
  • Fluency in Python and related numerical analysis libraries such as NumPy and Pandas, with strong hands-on experience in objected-oriented design
  • Experience using AWS/GCP/Azure cloud technologies and related services
  • Ability to source data and perform analytics through writing SQL-like scripts
  • Working grasp of machine learning concepts and development lifecycle
  • Strong communication skills while working with people from different disciplines, including non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with productionalizing machine learning models within a service-oriented architecture, preferred
  • Experience in using modern deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and Keras, preferred
  • Experience in working with open-source distributed data processing technologies such as Apache Hadoop and Spark, preferred
  • 10+ years of software development experience, with 5+ years of  experience in AI and ML technologies, distributed systems, data pipelines and cloud technologies
  • BS or MS in Computer Science/Engineering or engineering specific certifications or equivalent degree experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in people management
  • Strong software and data structure design, development, and architecture experience
  • Proven history of working in a fast paced, evolving, growing, and dynamic environment
  • Experience in building and working in a heavy agile, collaborative, innovative, flexible and team-oriented environment
  • Ability to be hands on with technical strategy around data platform, code reviews, testing and deployment
  • Strong analytical skills with a data driven approach and ability to measure impact of projects
  • Serves as an expert for multiple domains related to Healthcare data and analytics
  • A recognized thought leader in ML engineering
  • Hands-on, skillful communicator detail-oriented, methodical & inquisitive, skillful communicator
  • A motivated self-starter with a solid level of experience that quickly grasps complex challenges
